LiveLine

Addiction and recovery are difficult domains due to their stigmatized subject matters, deeply ingrained psychological behaviors, and overall lack of support from existing techonologies. Our team was tasked with Identifying the points where technology may be leveraged to deliver new service experiences to people in recovery for addiction and/or their family members and support networks.

What we created was LiveLine. LiveLine is a modern day video streaming platform for those in recovery. From our research, we identified patterns and relevant strategies to tailor a usable and approachable platform that supports one's recovery journey.

Research

Our team explored and learned through:

  • 31 semi-structured interviews

  • 14 open meetings

  • 11 subreddit communities

  • 1 treatment home

  • 1 drug court

And developed these insights:

  • Community relations: Community and positive personal connections play a large role in people's motivation to stay sober

  • Different resources: Different resources are utilized throughout the recovery process depending the person's current situation and physical, mental, emotional needs

  • Immediate access: Speed of access to the right resources is a large determinate in people starting and maintaining recovery

Iterating Through Ideas

We started by testing an intial concept of matching with a meeting buddy. Through interviews, we pivoted our idea from our insight that it wasn't enough just to make the first meeting experience easier through use of a buddy, but to actually deliver that meeting virtually. Due to reasons like COVID-19, easier access, and a more anonymous approach, a virtual video-streaming platform got overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Introducing: LiveLine

This was by far the most humbling and rewarding design work I've done. Not only was it the most in-depth and rigorous product development cycle I've participated in, understanding such a marginalized population and creating a product that would significantly help improve their quality of life was incredibly eye-opening. I learned that design should be used to solve these pressing problems, and be leveraged as a tool that can benefit people and their lifestyles.‍
